Umaga passed away one year ago today. Friends of the former Intercontinental champion have been posting messages on Twitter.  He is truly missed by many WWE fans.

Eddie Fatu, best known as Umaga from his days in WWE, died today in a Houston hospital following a heart attack. He was 36.

WWE posted a statement about Fatu's death on its website: "WWE would like to express its deepest condolences to Mr. Fatu’s family, friends and fans on his tragic passing. Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name 'Umaga.' Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009."

Fatu was one of the WWE superstars named in the infamous Sports Illustrated article as purchasing online pharmaceuticals, a violation of the WWE's Wellness Policy. He was suspended once for this, and then released after he was failed testing a second time and refused treatment in a rehabilitation facility.

Fatu has Samoan designed tattoos on his arms and legs. He sometimes wears a septum piercing as well as a grill while wrestling as Umaga.

As part of his gimmick he only yells in Samoan while appearing as Umaga, though he does speak English.

Umaga is currently engaged in a feud with John Cena for his WWE Championship . Since his return with the Umaga gimmick he has yet to be pinned or made to submit on television, though he has lost matches via disqualification and count-out. He has also lost a few matches where it is not a straight one-on-one match. e.g. Tag Team matches or Handicap Matches.

Fatu worked for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) for a short while after his WWE release under his old name, Ekmo, and would later move to All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) as a member of the Roughly Obsess & Destroy (RO&D) faction . Later, with Taiyo
In December 2005, Fatu announced he would be returning to World Wrestling Entertainment and gave his notice to AJPW.
